评分有心讀書者不必讀此書,無心讀書而想略知一二者可奉為入門至寶,Student Guide之名不負讀者。日前在圖書館為友人尋覓政治哲學入門書時偶然發現,見其薄薄一本五十頁且大字體,然從柏拉圖一直講到尼采,是我想提供的思路,於是借來一閱,後才發現原來是大名鼎鼎的施派學人Mansfield所著。其大體沿襲《現代性的三次浪潮》,勾勒政治哲學的關鍵時刻與概念,三言兩語間即把核心處道出,短小精悍可見功力深厚,堪稱大家小書。奈何其於洛克以先深入淺出,盧梭以降點到為止,歐美民主傳統僅存目,是施派作風也是其弊端。我欲向友人揭示如今佔據主流的歐美民主傳統以外的思路,此書堪稱絕妙選擇,然我無意直接遮蔽掉對方。為歐美民主辯護的著作和施派著作總是呈現一種二元對立的樣態,實在令我好生煩惱。取今復古才是我願。
