London Literary Society 的前傳，其實就是約翰遜博士，和約翰遜博士跟班、傳記作者Boswell的閤傳，再兼及俱樂部幾個最有名的成員。Boswell決定瞭這本書八卦的性質，適閤睡前和飛機上的閱讀。但Leo Damrosch溫和的氣質不太適閤八卦，比起Menand的《形而上學俱樂部》缺少煽情點，文筆也缺點那種改變或者定義一個時代的蓬勃之氣。
