Davis, Nathan (Tate), saxophonist, educator, author; b. Kansas City, MO, 15 February 1937. He is married to Ursula Broschke Davis (author of Paris Without Regret), with whom he has two children, Joyce Davis and Pierre Marc Davis.
He received a B.M.E. from University of Kansas in 1960. In 1967, he studied at Sorbonne (University of Paris) in Ethnomusicology. He studied Composition with Andre Hodeir in 1968. He earned his Ph.D., Wesleyan University (Conservatory) in Ethnomusicology in 1974. His dissertation was "The Life and Music of Charlie Parker and the Kansas City Environment."
He performed with the Charlie Mingus All-Star Band, Kool Jazz Festival, Saratoga, New York in 1982. In 1985, he performed with National Orchestra of Belgium. He went on the Paris Reunion Band Tour in 1985, touring Scandinavia, Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland, England, France and Switzerland. All performances from the tour were recorded for national radio and television. In 1995, he went on the Roots Band Tour, touring Scandinavia, Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland, England, France and Switzerland.
He has taught at the University of Pittsburgh since 1969. In 1980, he taught coruses in jazz history at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He taught saxophone at Oberlin Conservatory from 1984-85. In 1989, he taught at the Pro Arte de Musica, Rio De Janerio, Brazil. From 1984-89, he taught at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. From 1996 to present, he has been Director, Thelonious Monk Institute Summer Program, Aspen Colorado. From 2002 to present, he has been Director & faculty member, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program, Kennedy Center.
