The author spends a summer in St Petersburg, a city caught between its tragic past and its uncertain future. The people he meets are living in a strange restless present. People who have lost their old certainties are looking for a way to live in a city run by gangsters. Fallowell falls for a young sailor and this tragic relationship, about which Fallowell writes with some emotional honesty, is as elusive as the city itself. The city, seen under hot summer skies during the "white nights" the period of almost 24 hour daylight is beautifully evoked. Fallowell also conveys the fading, crumbling city, with its combination of splendour and smelly squalid decay. If you are at all interested in how things are in Russia today, then this book would be a good place to start.
