The bright and bubbly little book "Bubblegram" demonstrates how Olaf Nicolai playfully creates a work of urban art by painting a skatepark with varied colours. Stylistically, the abstract-ornamental sketches and photos remind one of PopArt design. The title "Bubblegram" is a word synthesis referring to "Archigram", a group of architects that made their name in the 60s for futuristic projects, and "Bubblegum".
Renowned conceptual artist Olaf Nicolai enjoys leaving traditional paths in the arts far behind him. Since the documenta X (1997), close observants are aware that his works tend towards "environment", i.e. they reflect trends directly emerging from modern/ urban life. He abolishes the boundaries between the everyday and art, but the work of art is not denied as such. In this manner Nicolai has tranformed objects like stickers, stamps and perfume into small collector's items. "Bubblegram" suits this context.
