本书是Hannerz在1980年代撰写的都市人类学的学科史。翔实、丰富，将一个原本可能泥沼一般的领域，大体上拎出几条线索来。遗憾的是，这本书最新的关注，也就是1980年代初期。该作者作为北欧人60年代曾在华盛顿研究贫民窟，出版过专著《灵魂一侧》，在都市人类学的发展中做出过贡献。作者后来一直致力于全球化过程中的场所之间的联系，没有给本书撰写80后到21世纪这20年间都市人类学发展史的续集。我倒是很想把这本书推荐给城市规划、地理学的学生，因为该书恰好讲述的是人类学家怎样看城市。
