本書是Hannerz在1980年代撰寫的都市人類學的學科史。翔實、豐富，將一個原本可能泥沼一般的領域，大體上拎齣幾條綫索來。遺憾的是，這本書最新的關注，也就是1980年代初期。該作者作為北歐人60年代曾在華盛頓研究貧民窟，齣版過專著《靈魂一側》，在都市人類學的發展中做齣過貢獻。作者後來一直緻力於全球化過程中的場所之間的聯係，沒有給本書撰寫80後到21世紀這20年間都市人類學發展史的續集。我倒是很想把這本書推薦給城市規劃、地理學的學生，因為該書恰好講述的是人類學傢怎樣看城市。
