Max Morden has reached a crossroads in his life, and is trying hard to deal with several disturbing things. A recent loss is still taking its toll on him, and a trauma in his past is similarly proving hard to deal with. He decides that he will return to a town on the coast at which he spent a memorable holiday when a boy. His memory of that time devolves on the charismatic Grace family, particularly the seductive twins Myles and Chloe. In a very short time, Max found himself drawn into a strange relationship with them, and pursuant events left their mark on him for the rest of his life. But will he be able to exorcise those memories of the past?

能写insouciance，绝不写indifference。太难读了。care不起来！
评分文笔是挺好，浪漫伤感型。但本人觉得这种回忆体比较压抑和低沉，有时觉得昏昏欲睡，有时觉得绝望得不想再读下去。主题重复：对于个人来说那么重要的一生，人的出生死亡，人的爱情友情，人的回忆等等，却对于这个世界来说，就像是大海里一个涟漪，一秒就消失，大海依然潮起潮落，世界依然运转，你存在不存在，好像根本没有影响和意义。"things endure,while the living lapse","cruel complacent of ordinary things"
评分2012.4. Very hard to read, too self-consciousness...so sad and lonely...At least it does not suit me for my current life stage when I am exposed to such an abundance of sunshine and uncertain opportunities. For now I still prefer the bright self-search style of Paulo Coelho.

评分2018.101 Banville实在是会写，情景人事的描写叙述细致入微又有一种点到为止的恰当，几十页的形容词还不重样我真的佩服（——大型英文词汇教授现场…）。温带海洋性气候的风情，永恒的雨水漂浮在爱尔兰阴郁的晴天，情绪弥漫在海风里。动人。【必须得要重读/或者还是乖乖读了译文版再重读。（好了，我知道自己英语很垃圾了。）】
