A powerful fantasy set in the pre-flood Noachian world that explores man's brokenness and the scope of God's grace. Dar'ock, a descendent of Cain, believes the curse placed on his forebearer and his forebearer's progeny is unfair. Ignoring the evil of his own ways, he is determined to "have words with the god that cursed him." He enslaves Garfe, a troglodyte, to be his guide. Garfe proves to be a constant challenge. He serves an enchantress who has supernatural powers, and he lures Dar'ock into the tangles of her evil web. Once within the walls of the enchantress' lair, Yennea, a young slave-girl, becomes his conscience and confronts him with kindness he does not comprehend. However, in his self-serving arrogance he remains determined to confront God with injustice, which leads him to seek the Hidden City and a crazy man who is building a huge boat in a waterless land. Choices he makes have a price and lead to a powerful conclusion to his quest.
