Stevenson, Stevenson wrote Davis on March 19, 1957, "While<br >I think the book brings it out, the essence of the campaign of 56 was<br >Truth-as I saw it. We owe the people the truth about their affairs or<br >they can t make intelligent decisions; and the Reps [Republicans] have<br >not told them the truth, the whole truth, rather they have lulled them<br >to sleep etc. etc. 1<br > The central issue of the 1956 campaign, Stevenson explained in a<br >speech at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on September 13, 1956, was<br >whether America wants to stay on dead center, mired in com-<br >placency and cynicism; or whether it wants once more now to move<br >forward- to meet our human needs, to make our abundance serve<br >all of us and to make the world safer- in short, to build a New<br >America.<br > The Republicans pose the issues of this campaign in terms of<br >slogans - "peace, prosperity, progress."<br > I pose these issues in terms of facts - the grim facts of America s<br >unmet human heeds, the facts of a revolutionary world in the hydro-<br > gen age.<br > Here are some facts:<br > In four years- four years of wealth and abundance- our gov-<br > ernment has let the shortage of schoolrooms and teachers get worse.<br > 1This handwritten letter is in the possession of Mr. Davis.
