CHAPTER AND VERSE is the story of the life of
David F. Altabe told through poetry. His Poems are
a record and expression of the thoughts and feelings
of his heart an4mind as he matured from young man-
hood to marriage and fatherhood. There is in them
a nostalgia for the past, even as the very moment is
being lived, for the awareness is there that it, too,
must pass. He speaks of lOve, of art, of God and of
death; and reminds us to rejoice in life and in the
happiness we are capable of giving One another. His
pOems of the nations and the races lament the tragedy
of the hatred and hostility that have caused so much
suffering and threaten to destroy our planet. Details
regarding the background of the pOems and the cirnurn-
stances that inspired them are given in the notes at
the end of the book. They are worthwhile reading to
anyone who has ever apprecaited a pOem, and won-
dered how it came to be written.
