A serger trims, then totally
encases, an edge of fabric- unlike
the zigzag on a conventional
sewing machine. Also, since the
stitches are formed over a metal
stitch finger, the edge will never
draw up, even on lightweight
silkies. Because sergers have
"loopers" that go over and under
the fabric, heavy decorative
threads, yarns, and ribbons can
be used. These cannot be used
on conventional machines
because they will neither fit
through the needle nor
penetrate many fabrics.
