One evening shortly before our fifth wedding anniver-
sary, while my husband was occupied with tending the
rose bushes in the garden, I went to the front room of our
house in Grand Prairie, Texas, just west of Dallas, and
took from the bookcase two scrapbooks filled with letters
received at the time of my marriage to Carey in September
1986. I settled down in one of our two large navy blue
armchairs as the summer sun lowered itself in the huge
Texas sky through the window behind me. I do not sit in
the front room often. My full-time work as director of the
intercessory prayer ministry at Dallas Baptist University
means that opportunities to look at scrapbooks full of
memories are rare indeed.
But something drew me to the front room now to read
the wishes and prayers made by friends and relatives at the
time I was about to enter into marriage for the first time at
