Like the better-known Santerla，<br >the Abakwa blend religious ideas derived<br >from West African (Efik and lboso)<br >sources with elements of Catholicism.<br >The members of the society， exclusi~，ely<br >male， are called Nafiigos， and include<br >large numbers of Castilian C ubans as well<br >as Afro-Cubans. In ritual masquerades，<br >the Nafiigos assume fearsome masks and<br >perform dances to commemorate and<br >reexperience the feats of cultic ancestors，<br >accompanied by drums and song; mod-<br >ern Cuban dance theater makes use of<br >some Abakwa folk elements. The syn-<br >cretic forms of the Abakwa Society repre-<br >sent one of the important New World<br >reinterpretations of African religious<br >traditions.<br >
