Abakwaï¼Œ Sociedad Secret society of African extraction based in Cuba. Like the better-known Santerlaï¼Œ the Abakwa blend religious ideas derived from West African (Efik and lboso) sources with elements of Catholicism. The members of the societyï¼Œ exclusi~ï¼Œely maleï¼Œ are called Nafiigosï¼Œ and include large numbers of Castilian C ubans as well as Afro-Cubans. In ritual masqueradesï¼Œ the Nafiigos assume fearsome masks and perform dances to commemorate and reexperience the feats of cultic ancestorsï¼Œ accompanied by drums and song; mod- ern Cuban dance theater makes use of some Abakwa folk elements. The syn- cretic forms of the Abakwa Society repre- sent one of the important New World reinterpretations of African religious traditions.
