Twelve years later, the Milford Con-<br > ference.undertook the task of conceptualizing a commoll base<br >: for casework as practiced in many specialized settings I i the<br > ~ :ensuing years, casework theoreticians spent mucb of their en-<br > ergy trying to develop a generic theory that would synthesize<br > fl~e intet~ests of many specialities into a common professional<br > identity, The exceptio~a to tbis preoccupation with generic<br > theory was the theoretical schism between the diagnostic and<br > functional schools during tile forties. Casework became committed in fact as<br > well as in word, to the scientific method, and empirical<br > studies proliferated. Many of these studies addressed tile<br > question of casework s effectiveness.
