FOREWORD I first met the author and his wife in New York City after he had contacted one of my friends. He told me that he was going to write a book about the Native Americans on the East Coast. I liked his idea of the bookï¼Œ which was to inform re~tders that Native Amer- icans still exist in the East. I had read in some books that we did not exist anymore. This had always troubled me since I knew of no way to inform people that we are still around and that we had not been extinguished. The object of this book was to say "Hello. Here we are. We are fine." Since our first meetingï¼Œ the author and I have met to discuss the book and its contentsï¼Œ and from time to time I would hear from him about his progress. He was doing something that many writers fail to do. He was meeting the people he was writing about and asking them "What do you want said about your peo- ple?" and "What do you want changed from the usual writing?" And he was allowing the people to see what he had written before it was published. Many misconceptions about the Native Americans have been passed along through the years. This book offers an opportunity to have some of these stereo- types dispelled. It is very important to us that people realize we still exist and are still carrying out the duties that were handed down to us by our ancestors.
