A WORD TO THE TEACHER
Would you like to know how to teach the Bible? You canr.
This Teacher s Manual for the Ten Basic SteU 7bward Christian Maturity
(11 individual booklets) and the Handbook for Christian Maturity (a compilation of
those booklets) has been designed and written to enable even a new Christian to
lead and teach Bible study groups.
The Ten Basic Steps Towant Christian Maturity and the ltandbook for Christian
Maturity, together with this Teacher s Manual, are products of necessity.
Ks the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ expanded rapidly to scores of
campuses across America, thousands of students committed their lives to Christ --
as many as four or five hundred on a single campns. Individual follow-up of all
new converts soon became an impossibility. Who was to help them grow m
their new-found faith?
A Bible study series desigmcd for new Christians was desperately needed, a
study which would stimulate individuals and groups alike to explore the depths and
the riches of God s Word. Though several excellent studies were available, there
was nothing which wc felt met the particular need of these college students.
In 1955, several members of our staffwere assigned to assist me in the prepara-
tion of materials which wc hoped would stinmlate both Christian growth and
evangelism in a new believer. The contribution by campus staff members was
especially significant because of their constant contact with students, introducing
them to Christ and meeting regularly with them to assist them in their
Christian growth. Thus, the "Fen Basic SteU "Ibwad Christian Maturity -- a study in
"follow-up evangelism" -- was the fruit of our combined labor.
The unusual popularity of this Bible study series soon posed an additional
problem -- a teacher s manual was needed. No longer could one staff member
teach all of the many Bible study groups organized on a single campus. Mso, many
other groups were now requesting use of these materials. As the Ca,npus Crusade
for Christ nfinistry expanded to new campuses and many additional workers joined
our staff, I fousld it necessary to be away trom nay ministry on the campus at
LICLA where the work was first launched. My wife, Vonettc, was recruited to
suhstimtc. In order properly to supervise the mimv Bibh" stt, dics on the campus, she
found it necessary to appoint a leader for each Bible study group. Each week
Vonette prepared lesson plato and met with all the leaders to teach them the
material they would teach their individual Bible study groups.
This was the beginning of the Teacher s Manual for the Ten Basic Steps. Since that
modest beginning, many other members of the staff, have contributed generously to
the present volume which you hold in your hands. On occasion, fi)r example, I
have found myself involved in research and writing sessions which involved several
of our staff, all seminary graduates, several with advanced degrees, one with his
doctorate in theology. More important, all of them are actively engaged in
"winning men, building men and sending men" f~)r Christ.
Although thousands of hours have been invested in writing these materials, we
are still confident they can be improved.
