Making History: The People Who Shaped the San Juan Islands 在线电子书 图书描述

In the beginning
Like the legendary continent of Atlantis, the San Juan Islands lie
largely beneath tile sea. They are peaks of a sunken mountain range
which anciently joined Vancouver Island and what is now the state of
Washington.
Around this enchanting archipelago, some 75 miles north north-
west from Seattle, is a maze of straits and bays, the mecca of thousands
of pleasure boats in summer.
If one could forsake the shoreside cottages, placid villages, oil
docks, ferryboats and moorages and descend into the salty depths, he
would be in a nest of solidly massed rocky hills, some faced with sheer
vertical cliffs.
An inquisitive frogman would find deep valleys and subterranean
mountains of long grass on the bottom. Lummi, Cypress and Guemes are
part of the geographical entity known as the San Juans, but are part of
Whatcom and Skagit counties. Orcas is the largest, with 56.9 square
miles sprawled in the shape of a gigantic pair of saddlebags. San Juan
is 1.5 square miles smaller than Orcas. Lopez, totaling 29.5 square
miles, is third. Lummi, Cypress, Shaw, Guemes, Blakely, Waldron
and Decatur are next in the order of their size.
The main group of the San I ua ns is midway between Anacortes and
Victoria, B.C. and it is 73 miles from Shilshole Bay to Friday Harbor.
Some reach as far north as Bellingham. This miniature world rises up
