PART ONETHE MANDELA MARCHWednesday 28 August 1985By 9 a.m. a crowd of almost four thousand people has gatheredoutside Athlone Stadium. They are intent on marching from there toPollsmoor Prison to deliver a message of solidarity to Nelson Mandelaand other political prisoners. There is a heavy police presence withmany Casspirs and vans in evidence. The stadium is completelysealed off. Policemen and soldiers line the whole of Klipfontein Roadon the stadium side, from central Athlone to Vanguard Drive. Justbefore 10 a.m. the officer in charge gives the crowd five minutes inwhich to disperse. When the order is ignored the police move in.
