<p>One summer long ago, the Sioux Indians were starving because their hunters could not find any game. Scouts were sent out every day, but they came back empty handed each time. One day, the scouts climbed a high hill in order to see far across the land. In the distance they saw a figure floating toward them. The approaching figure was a beautiful young woman. She wore a white buckskin outfit that sparkled in the sun. It was deco- rated with a sacred design made with brightly colored porcupine quills. She carried a large sack and a fan of sage leaves. Her hair was blue-black and tied up at the side with buffalo 7 In this atlas a "local-name" policy ~enerally was used for naming cities and towns and all local topographic and water features. However, for a few major cities the Anglicized name was preferred and the local name given in parentheses, for instance, Moscow(Moskva), Vienna (Wien), Prague (Praha). In countries where more than one official language is used, a name is in the dominant local language. The generic parts of local names for topographic and water features are self-explanatory in many cases because of the associated map symbols or type styles.</p>
