The drawback to being acknowledged in a book about Maui is it
means you worked in the office rather than Hawaii. That's not true of
my wife, Leslie Henriques, who has been helping me research Maui
for years; or Claire Chun who hails from Hawaii; or Roger Rapoport,
who helped with the field research.
But editors Frances Bowles and Joanna pearlman; indexer Sayre
Van Young; and research associates Per Casey, Lee Micheaux, Ellen
Nidy, Jennifer Wilkoffand Andrea Orvik would all I am sure happily
trade this meager thanks for a plane ticket to paradise.
I am nevertheless extremely grateful to all of them and extend a
huge mahalo to everyone who helped bring this book to press.
