THE
BARON
GOES
FAST
JOHN CREASEY,s
ANTHONY MORTON
Was the Wannamaker
a diversion? A smoke
diamond heist just
screen set up by a
financial wizard plotting a grand coup
on the money market? Or was it an in-
trigue spurred by family rivalries? Just
how was the American, Robbie Chad-
wick, guilty? And who was "Dizzy"
one gangster or a composite?
John Mannering, once the Baron (for-
mer jewel thief and latter-day Robin
Hood) now proprietor of Quinn's in Lon-
don's West End, displays and sells the
treasures of centuries. He involves him-
self in the hunt for the gems out of sheer
sentimentality--because he sold Wanna-
maker the diamonds, he wants to know
what has happened to them. His curiosity
brings him face to face with a school of
thugs whose lessons are taught over tele-
phones, in lonely hotel rooms, and at a
suburban house, and whose specialty is
slit throats!
