From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-- Significantly revised since the 1987 edition, this is now the most current book on AIDS regarding research findings, testing, and social action for young adults. Because the writing is somewhat dry and the details and format require close attention, this is for serious readers rather than those who are interested in learning how to protect themselves. For that purpose, Lynda Madaras Talks to Teens About AIDS (Newmarket, 1988) is a better choice. This third edition omits the Surgeon General's report but retains the Michael Callen story, updating his efforts on behalf of people with AIDS (PWAs). A new chapter on caring for PWAs and other widespread actions gives hope that public compassion is increasing. Resource addresses, hotlines, and the glossary have been changed for the better; the glossary includes drugs that don't work, despite pressure on the FDA to rush approval for their use. Research findings through 1988 include new methods of faster and more accurate testing, such as PCR. Legislation regarding AIDS testing, including the Louisiana repeal, show the changing political attitude toward the complexity of this disease. The final chapter has less speculation than the second edition, along with recommendations for solutions to the prejudices that have re-emerged so virulently in the 1980s. --Anne Osborn, Youth Training School, Dept. of Youth Authority, Ontario, CACopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
