Hotel Twenty-Nine
Travis Air Force Base is about an hour-and-a-half drive
up Interstate 80 from San Francisco. The highway
roams over and between those low hills linking the Bay
Area with California s vast agricultural interior. Tract
housing creeps obscenely up some of the slopes. An oc-
casional billboard claims too much of the view; one
screams "Impeach Earl Warren!" To the west is that
huge red sun falling into the Pacific. The reason they
call it "Golden California" bgcomes obvious on this
road at this time of day. BefoPe~ it moves out of sight,
the red ball turns everything a glowing, fluid gold--the
rolling hills wearing a soft grassy mantle and a few
clumps of trees and mounds of rocks; the highway,
black most of the day; even the oncoming cars bearing
natives in deep tans, outrageous colors, and--always--
the sunglasses. You squint at the goldness of everything,
but it s not like squinting at the glare of midday sun off
a new snowfall--this feels good, warm, almost makes
one desire sleep. So you squint to expose more of your
eyelids to that golden warmth, and you want to stay--
goddam, you want to stay all of a sudden--did I really
volunteer for this thing?
Soon the gold ball leaves to tend to Hawaii, the thou-
sands of mini-islands farther west, then on to that part
