In The Kentish Manor Murders, Julian
Symons, Grand Master of mysteries, takes
the classic scene for murder--the English
country house--and adds an ingenious
ttolmesian twist.
Sheridan t taynes is a quintesscntially
English actor whose portrayal of Sherlock
Holmes makes many admirers think he
is the great detective. When Haynes is
summoned to "Castle Baskerville" to give a
private performance of his celebrated role
for the notorious tycoon Warrcn Waymark,
he goes with some reluctance. Waymark is
an eccentric American billionaire, a recluse
whom no one but his own servants has seen
tbr years. His only passion is Sherlock
Holmes, if indeed he is alive to have any
passions at all.
Once inside the guarded gates, Haynes
and his wife, Valerie, become players in a
real drama of murder and intrigue set
against the backdrop of the castle s collec-
tion of Holmes artifacts. Is the obsessed old
man the master of the castle, or the prisoner
of his own unsavory staff? Is he alive at all?
And what of the newly discovered Sherlock
Holmes manuscript? Authentic? Or merely
bait to lure a decrepit billionaire from the
safety of his fortress?
When the first body is found, it is clear
that the murderer can only be one of the
guests or one of the servants, and it is up to
Haynes and Valerie to save themselves by
finding the killer first.
