Most of us stand poised at the edge of brilliance, haunted by the knowledge of our proximity, yet still demonstrably on the wrong side of the line, our dealings with reality undermined by a range of minor yet critical psychological flaws (a little too much optimism, an unprocessed rebelliousness, a fatal impatience or sentimentality).

我记得一个朋友跟我说过，德波顿最该死的地方其实只是他的剑桥背景，还有有个posh的名字……这也从侧面注定他的文字再清新隽永，也永远是端着架子的。作为一个科学追星的批判型粉丝，不得不指出德波顿在表达上的问题：显然他是想延续18世纪Samuel Johnson式短小精炼的格言体，这样的文字耐读，却在解决具体问题时难免显得浮夸。尤其考虑到德波顿志在让哲学走出庙堂接近公众的努力，这样的表达方式会显得过于out of touch。想到这点，我又不由狂妄地觉得”社会学的想象力“的重要性，一个接受过社会学专业训练的作者完全有可能比德波顿做得更好，因为它同时赋予了作者在经验世界中分析洞见和捕捉洞见的能力……

他“Photo reportage"的叙述是无聊的，他看事情还是透彻的。 Being a bystander lends him a detached perspective, which enables him to look at things in a more penetrating and incisive way.
