In his foreword to Jack Kersley s invaluable
book, F. Kenneth Atkinson writes, There is no
reason why any sportsman, after following his
methods, so simply described and easy to
follow, should not have a steady and reliable
retriever. Here, indeed, is an illustrated manual
to answer the need of anyone seeking firm and
original guide-lines on tile subject, from early
principles to advanced training.
Mr Kersley is a consultant surgeon, and the
dedication and concentration notable in his
profession are apparent in h~s book, a product
of steady experience and observation in his
mature years. Above all it is soundly based on
a deep understanding of canine nature. From
this foundation, and with refreshing naturalness
and humour, the author builds a logical and
original course of management and training.
Finally there is much useful information and
advice on early shots, working tests, field
trials, and on judges and judging, with appropri-
ate appendices. Mr Kersley e method is wholly
convincing and has~ instant practical appeal.
The many sketches by James Croft and photo-
graphs by Arthur Robinson complement the
text in a remarkable way.
