Impressionism is the most exciting and significant art movement of recent times, and is regarded as having pioneered what is konwn as Modern Art. The public first became aware of this revolutionary new Movement through the exhibits at the now famous Salon des Refusés in Paris, where a group of young artists mounted an idependtly organised exhibition of paintings in 1874, in a delibetate attempt to find another outlet for their work besides the offical Salon.The were preoccupied with effects of light and atmosphere, and their brushwork was generally free and intuitive and they placed great value on outdoor studies.Impressionism became synonymous with a joyful use of clear colour to suggest form, space and luminosity.
