All too often drama is considered to be either literature
or theater. Literature departments take one approach,
theater departments the other. Actually, drama incor-
porates literary and theatrical art. And with this book
we hope to encourage the study of drama in relation
to both literary and theatrical contexts. Thus we have
devoted the first part of our book to explaining these
contexts and the way they interact to produce the
unique experience of drama. In the remaining parts of
our study, we discuss the modes and elements of drama
in terms of the interaction between these contexts.
