This text is designed primarily for an introductory course in physical
education at the college level. New up-to-date material has been added to
!this second edition in an attempt to provide the reader with the best
s~ntific evidence in the area of physical education. Though it covers
many areas in the broad field of physical education, this book primarily deals
with the specific areas of physical activity, exercise, health, physical
fitness, skill learning, and body mechanics.
An outline format is used to give the reader a concise and factual presen-
lation with regard to the HOW, WHAT, and WHY of physical activity
and exercise. Discussion has been kept to a minimum; bibliographies,
suggested readings, and extensive documentation are provided for the
reader who wishes to further pursue a specific topic.
There are twenty concepts and thirty accompanying laboratory exercises
which are appropriate for both men and women. In addition, this edition
contains two appendices; Appendix A, testing procedures and Appendix B,
exercise programs. An understanding and appreciation of the information
presented in these pages should provide the foundation for an intelli-
gent selection of activities and health practices to aid the individual in
leading a useful and productive life.
A comprehensive Instructor s Handbook is available to teachers who use
the text in their classes. It includes suggestions for organizing the classes,
grading, lecture outlines, and laboratory instructions, as well as
suggested supplementary activities. A master set of illustrations suitable
or transparencies is available to accompany the lectures.
