SEBASTIAO RIBEIRO SALGADO, world-renowned exemplar of the tradition of "concerned photography," has been awarded virtually every major photographic prize in France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. Trained as an economist, he began working as a photojournalist in 1973. Salgado's AN UNCERTAIN GRACE was published by Aperture in 1990 to enormous acclaim, followed in 1993 by the epic WORKERS. A recipient of the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, he has twice been named Photographer of the Year by the International Center of Photography, New York. Based in Paris, Salgado has exhibited his work worldwide.
MIGRATIONS documents the world-altering phenomenon of mass migration. Salgado's images collectively serve as a metaphor for the hundreds of millions of people who, in an elemental struggle for survival, have ruptured their ties with land and tradition in a flight toward other destinies. With his unique vision and empathy, Salgado gives us a clearer picture of the enormous social and political tranformations now occuring in a world divided between excess and need.
