"After what seemed an age of bumping over the
stones and wiry grass, and all the while with a
deliberate and keyed-up silence between us, I saw
movement ahead and the outline of people and
two cars. We stopped and I flung open the door
of the Triumph. Our headlights shone on some-
one on the brow of the hill. The figure was
crouched, arms poundin~ away at the earth and
the stones. The people in the shadows seemed to
be watching and waiting, but there was no sense
of patience, of acceptance. The air was charged
with a peculiar tension, a watchin~ for some sig-
nificant movement.
"As we turned off the engine, the crouching
man looked up. In the unnatural color of our head-
lights his face was greenish yelIow, as if a group
of trees nearby found a leafy reflection in it. It was
terrible and reco~nizabIe."
