不可能通过一部小说就了解印度，不过这一本绝对值得推荐为了解印度社会的第一本书。作者对印度社会仆役关系和阶级冲突的形成，套用在主人公生存、挣扎和最后逃离的故事中。小说没有直接的批判这种根深蒂固的文化，但第一人称的无奈叙述语气，目的是为了让读者产生共鸣还是主人公的真实想法呢，大家见仁见智。读完此书，算是能稍微理解印度人狡猾奸诈的由来，这不是天性，还是由于社会和宗教本身的压力束缚造成的。就好像作者在书里比喻的，对那些土生土长的印度人来说，没有人敢做挣脱牢笼，成为一只白老虎。
