Meanwhile, two other cases appear. There s Ward s representation of journalist Eddie Stevens, who was beaten up while pursuing a story about badger-baiting--and who found a long-concealed corpse in the process. There s also a legal tangle involving wife Ann s far-flung business Morcomb Estates--something to do with Mexican holdings once owned by aging entrepreneur Halliday Lansley. Are there connections amongst the cases? There are indeed--by way of Lansley s former henchman Donald Bartlett, who s just been released from prison. . . and by way of the missing Charles Crane s elusive partner Peter Stonier. And hero Ward eventually makes them, with some help from client Stevens. But they re not compelling enough to lift this story above its dully familiar characters and heavy air of contrivance.??
