Eavesdropping on intimate therapy sessions is one satisfaction to be derived from this casebook. Kaplan, an eclectic psychotherapist who teaches at Adelphi University in New York, shuttles easily between Freudian psychoanalysis, ego psychology and object relations theory as he tackles his patients neuroses. Analysands include a college student breaking up with her boyfriend, a woman whose husband is having an affair, a middle-aged man uncomfortable with his deep-seated anger, a sufferer from visual hallucinations and a man who claims he has no feelings whatsoever. The primer s clinical prose, hairsplitting analyses and technical orientation may daunt the general reader, but the book might prove useful to persons in therapy. Kaplan wants us to experience the flux of therapeutic interaction, and his painstaking reenactments of individual sessions sometime achieve this goal.
