查尔斯·西格尔（Charles Segal，1936-2002），美国古典学家。1961 年获哈佛大学博士学位。曾先后任教于宾夕法尼亚大学，布朗大学，普林斯顿大学，自1990 年起在哈佛大学担任希腊文和拉丁文教授。西格尔擅长古典文学，研究领域广阔，在奥维德、荷马、塞涅卡和欧里庇得斯的研究方面均有建树，尤以解读诗歌为胜，是20世纪最为高产的古典学家之一。一生发表论文无数，出版专著21 部，除本书外，代表作还包括Landscape in Ovid’s Metamorphoses (1969), Tragedy and Civilization: An Interpretation of Sophocles (1981，中文版三联书店即出), Dionysiac Poetics and Euripides’ Bacchae (1982), Lucretius on Death and Anxiety (1990)。
