No Go on Jackson Street marks the de-
but of narrator-hero Ben Henry, a news-
paperman forced out of his job at the San
Francisco Courier for probing too deeply
into police corruption. Making do as a
taxi-driver to keep himself on a beat and
his ex-wife in alimony payments, Ben is
used to no-gos-- people who call for a cab
and then don t show -- but the late night
no-go at 3670 Jackson was not routine. It
was the home of gossip columnist Harry
Shugart, and at the hour Ben got his call,
Shugart was being murdered inside. Un-
able to resist a plea to investigate, and
encouraged by Shugart s gorgeous daugh-
ter, Ben is drawn into solving a mystery
whose answers may not be fit to print.
Mike Weiss won a 1984 Edgar Award for
the best fact crime book of the year.
