People in Need with the support of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs published its book “Transformation: The Czech Experience”. The collection of articles depicts individual aspects of the Czech transformation to democracy, including the constitutional and economic reforms, judiciary transformation, media changes, lustration screening process etc. The articles were written by people who were directly involved in the reform process and have first hand experience with the challenges and obstacles they have faced after 1989.

The book provides the readers with general historical information as well as particular details on the development of the most important reforms made in the Czech Republic in the 1990s. Most importantly, it includes the views of the individual participants in the whole transformation process and outlines its successes and failures.

The book has been published by the Human Rights and Democracy Department of People in Need as a part of the projects aimed at supporting the opposition in authoritarian countries by sharing the Czech transition experience. It intends to provide those struggling to achieve democracy with inspiration and help them to prepare for the transformation of their respective countries.

The English version of the book was delivered to the opposition and civil society groups inside Burma and to the exile Burmese communities in Thailand and other countries. The previously published Belarusian and Spanish versions have been distributed to the people in Belarus and Cuba. Recently published Russian version of the book is aimed at Russian-speaking communities across the former USSR.

From the preface by Petr Pithart, current 1st Vice-President of the Czech Senate:

“Today, fifteen years on, we are trying to reflect on and learn from both our achievements and our failures. We try to imagine the position of those who will take power tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, somewhere close or a world apart. In doing so, we assume responsibility for the future of those countries setting out on the difficult road to freedom, countries that will find themselves on a stage, thrust into the spotlight.”
