"It's more real to me here than if I went up, he suddenly heard himself say. And the fear lest that last shadow of reality should lose its edge kept him rooted to his seat as the minutes succeeded each other."
评分The romance was mediocre but the ending took it to a new level. A preserved marriage was the only way it could have ended, yet it broke my heart to hear his own son speak, with manyfold irony, of Ellen as his Fanny. But was Newland right to think a reuion decades after it was due could remedy nothing--or did he fool himself into losing her again?
