Like Myra Hess, Eric James has for a number of years been promising his devoted audience his last book. Now again he promises that The Voice of This Calling will be his last book. In these moving addresses, Eric James speaks in the first place to those of more mature years (a rapidly increasing constituency) but also to those who are pastorally concerned with them. Here are reflections based on profound spiritual and pastoral experience about the nature of growing older, of the loss of close friends and relatives, of Christian hope, on the purpose of remembrance of the departed and on the true meaning of priesthood. In his introduction, Eric James describes how a chance discovery of a copy of T.S. Eliot's Little Gidding changed his life and how he understood his vocation to be not just a Christian priest but also a Christian preacher. Writing of his recent years of ministry James says simply, 'No period of my ministry has been more privileged - or more painful and demanding. One can only trust and obey The Voice of this Calling'. In the modern world, we tend to think that we can reach God by running faster, by gobbling up more and more information. In the pages of this book is the true antidote to such folly.
