E. O. Hoppe's work has recently been reassembled. This remarkable collection of photographs made in Australia by the German-born British photographer is the second book in an on-going series which represents the unearthing of a cultural landmark and an unsung Modernist masterwork. In the first part of the twentieth century, Hoppe was arguably the most famous photographer in the world, specialising in celebrity portraiture. Throughout the 1920s, Hoppe developed a Modernist approach to topographic work, particularly in his photographs of industrial subjects. In 1930, enthralled by Australia and its people, Hoppe captured images of life in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin and Canberra, along with the people and places of the interior. The earliest comprehensive portrait of Australia made by one photographer, this collection of his striking images captures the stark beauty of the country's landscape, the realities of day-to-day life and the complexities of its many peoples.
