This is an activity-centred course written especially for use in colleges teaching tourism and hospitality or in in-house training courses where students need to acquire quickly a basic knowledge of Japanese. It includes phrases and expressions essential for dealing with Japanese guests and customers. The course has been written with the needs of teachers in mind, and is a product of the authors' years of experience as teachers of Japanese and working in the tourism industry. The course consists of a textbook and an audio-cassette tape, sold separately. There are 16 initial lessons, plus 4 lessons for revision or, if the teacher chooses, for testing. Each of the 16 lessons consists of: two main dialogues - one where a tourism industry provider talks to a Japanese guest or customer, and the other, in most scenes, presents someone in the office setting dealing with a Japanese visitor. Skills and knowledge acquired are therefore not strictly limited to the hospitality industry; a useful word list, other notes on grammar etc, and a clearly set-out table of plain and polite forms; a section on relevant expressions - these are explained in English, with examples in Japanese to show exactly when and where to use these expressions; listening and speaking practice with man exercises, including listening exercises, individual-, pair-, and group-speaking practice, and projects to be undertaken outside class time. The exercises are set out clearly, so teachers can concentrate on observing and monitoring student performance with very little time wasted on explanation and setting up.
