Merricat Blackwood lives on the family estate with her sister Constance and her uncle Julian. Not long ago there were seven Blackwoods - until a fatal dose of arsenic found its way into the sugar bowl one terrible night. Acquitted of the murders, Constance has returned home, where Merricat protects her from the curiosity and hostility of the villagers. Their days pass in happy isolation until cousin Charles appears. 我喜歡Merricat，她的孩子氣，她的聰明，她的那股傻勁。她感知外部與認識內心的能力都錶明瞭她不可能和那些可怕的“正常人”一樣。自我與他人之間界限分明的需要，來自於對他者的恐懼。就像姐妹二人隔離自己來提防他人，村民們也視她們如另一個世界的怪物。瘋狂的不是行事獨特的姐妹，更是那些暴力的大眾。
评分讀的時候不覺得什麼, 閤上書本迴想某些細節的時候有點小發冷. 作者在幾本書中都擅於把house塑造成character. 全書偏psychological, 喚醒小時候在一個地方流傳的那個古老城堡的rumor.
