The folktales in this book are very popular among the Chinese and date back thousands of years. There are many and varied versions of them,but we give only one version of each."The Cowherd and the Weaving Maid" and "Seeking Her Husband at the Great Wall" are early works of Ye Shengtao and Zhong Jingwen,tow celebrated writers and educators in China. The accompanying rare woodcut reproductions which present different versions of the stories were provided by Wang Shucun of the Chinese Research Institute of Fine Arts. Other illustrations were done by popular contemporary artists.
