卡爾·貝剋爾 (Carl Lotus Becker 1873-1945)，美國著名曆史學傢，曾任康奈爾大學教授、美國曆史學會主席、美國科學院院士，受業於“邊疆史學”代錶人物F.J.特納，為“進步派”史學陣營的代錶人物之一。

譯者何兆武，1921年生於北京，原籍湖南，西南聯大曆史係畢業。曾任中國社科院曆史所研究員，清華大學思想文化研究所教授，德國馬堡大學客座教授。多年緻力於中國思想史、西方思想史、曆史哲學的教學與研究。譯述康德、盧梭、羅素、帕斯卡、孔多塞等西方思想傢的學術經典20餘種。

In a new foreword, Johnson Kent Wright looks at the book's continuing relevance within the context of current discussion about the Enlightenment.
