To Inspector Blackstone, the first kidnapping seems to have all the hallmarks of an amateur operation. The snatch is crude, the ransom too low, the child returned unharmed - and with almost panicked haste. The second kidnapping is altogether slicker and ends bloodily. But it is with the third - the spectacular abduction of a young Indian crown prince from a busy and heavily guarded London street - that the Inspector is forced to accept that this is no ordinary gang he is dealing with. As Blackstone does all he can to track down the kidnappers, it becomes plain that it is not just the safety of one child that is at stake - it is the future of the entire British Empire!
