When Matisse and Picasso first met in the spring of 1906, Matisse was already crowned "King of the Fauves" and Picasso was poised to challenge the leadership of the avant-garde. Although the two artists never became intimate friends, they were in regular contact for the last 20 years of Matisse's life, and their friendship became much warmer when Picasso moved to the South of France in 1946.
