Humanitarian emergency assistance is a vital, but complex activity. Since the 1990s, donors and aid agencies have re-evaluated policy and practice, and in 1998 the British government developed a policy of New Humanitarianism to address the shortcomings and role of humanitarian assistance in tackling conflict and furthering development. This book analyses New Humanitariansim and is effectiveness in Sierra Leone - the test case for the policy. Placing the experience of Sierra Leone in context with other states, including Iraq and Sudan, Tanja Schumer outlines the dramatic impact that New Humanitarianism has for the future of international humanitarian policy.
