As the Stonewall Riot on Christopher Street in New York in 1969 marked the birth of the gay rights movement worldwide, the struggle has in four decades resulted in equality on the basis of sexual orientation being enshrined in much of Western and non-Western jurisprudence and politics, as the understanding of sexual minorities and sexual orientation, as well as equality, through systematic scientific and academic research has since increased. Discrimination and harassment on the basis of one's sexual identity, however, continues to subsist, both in the law and in society. As a tribute to the courageous spirit of those who participated in the Stonewall Riot, this collection will look into the achievements, and the stalemate and obstacles that hinder them from materializing, in various countries in six different continents. Issues ranging from transformation from apartheid and state-sanctioned conservatism to constitutional protection of sexual minorities and recognition of same-sex marriage and partnership; discrimination resulting from HIVS/AIDS status; sado-masochism and the law; the continued invisibility and persecution of sexual minorities; homophobic bullying and hate crimes; as well as sexual orientation persecution as grounds for asylum will be covered. This book was previously published as a special issue of "The International Journal of Human Rights".
